As president of the L’Orignal Old Jail Committee it is a great pleasure to invite you to visit the oldest public building in the United Counties of Prescott-Russell which was declared an historical site under the Heritage Act of Ontario. The prison dates from 1825 and was closed in 1998. The prison reopened in 2007 as a heritage interpretation centre and more than 3000 visitors have taken advantage of the reopening of the building.
Come and discover the inmates’ sorrows and secrets, as well as experience life in the narrow vaulted cells these inmates would definitely not call home. Hear about the stories of the employees who worked at the prison over the years.
As well, three exhibits highlight some of the history of the region. Discover the rich history of Caledonia Springs – at one time the prime spa in Canada. Learn about the Treadwells, father and son, who bought and developed the seigniory of L’Orignal. Follow the ups and downs of The Hamilton/Hawkesbury Lumber Company from 1811 to 1942.
From June to September we offer numerous activities to entertain and educate visitors. Participate in a murder-mystery evening, experience para-normal feelings at our guided night crawl. During the Arts at the Court weekend discover talent from the area.
Visit our web site for more information.
We hope that you will take the time to visit our museum or participate in one of our activities. Have a wonderful summer!!
